It's been a long time between updates. At least I cleaned off the page. Lately I have been reading an autobiography of Knut Hamsun and browsing in his novels. Not many are available, and the titles apparently haven't always been translated the same...just to make it tougher. There is a movie about him, his second wife, and Naziism but I haven't seen it yet. An interesting life, full of self-promotion and bullshit (this is, after all, a writer we are talking about.) Interesting work, but probably not that accessible to readers a century later.
Here's a find!
The War Journal of Major Damon "Rocky" Gause was written by American army pilot Rocky Gause and relates--with considerable humour and style--his experiences in the early months of the Second World War. Gause was in Manila when the war began and took part in the defense of Bataan and Corregidor, escaping the Japanese several times. With another soldier, he sailed a small fishing boat from the Philippines all the way to Australia. This is a book I could have read at one sitting. Published by Hyperion. I was declared by San Jose State University to be one of the eleven worst writers (in English) in the world in 1996. This, of course, is the Bulwer-Lytton contest.
Others brief offenses....
